Social networking sites 'can benefit employees'

Far from being a distraction to workers, social networking sites are being hailed as beneficial to both employees and employers.

According to Orange Business UK companies and their staff can take advantage of community sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo.

Speaking on behalf of the firm, Peter Bradwell from independent think tank Demos, said: "There are clear benefits economically and with regard to the development of ideas and innovation in the way that a workplace works but there are challenges this opens up for organisations, especially those that maybe a bit more sceptical.
"There are difficulties but, if you can get the balance right, there are some real benefits for both employees and organisations."

His comments follow a report published last month by Orange and Demos which looked into the impact of social networking sites on businesses.

Job seekers are warned, however, that online profiles of candidates are sometimes scrutinised by companies before they decide whether to offer them a position. ADNFCR-1196-ID-18863361-ADNFCR
