Support helps employees back to work

Most workers with health problems can return to employment if the right support is provided, new research has claimed.

According to researchers from the University of York, more than 90 per cent of staff with health problems can be helped by good healthcare and workplace management.

"We are looking at how we can work with employers to make sure people get the support they need in the workplace," said work and pensions secretary James Purnell.

The study concluded long-term sickness levels and employees moving to incapacity benefit could be reduced by 60 per cent.

General levels of wellbeing are influenced by diet, exercise and stress. Certain jobs have less opportunities to be active – a secretary for example will spend much of their working day at their desk.

The Health and Safety Executive's workplace fitness initiatives include a cycle to work scheme, which encourages exercise outside of the workplace.
