Wellbeing initiative shows healthy results

A workplace health initiative has proved employers can make a difference to the wellbeing of their employees.

The joint venture between the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the Department of Health and Sport has gleaned positive results.

It introduced pedometer challenges, health checks and fruit giveaways, and used the support of fellow staff to encourage workers to be healthier.

"Employers have a crucial role to play if we are to make wellness at work a reality for all, not a privilege for the few," commented Dame Carol Black, national director.

By taking part, workers increased the amount they walked or cycled to work and back, increasingly used the stairs instead of the lift and upped their daily intake of fruit and veg.

A secretary or general office worker can find themselves sedentary for long periods, the BHF recommends just 30 minutes of physical activity five times per week.
