Offices and homes dump 12 million computers

Offices and homes have dumped more than 12 million PCs in the last five years without trying to recycle them.

According to research by Fujitsu Siemens, IT equipment accounts for 39 per cent of the UK's annual waste.

"This is a huge missed opportunity. With the right facilities these thrown away units could easily be re-used elsewhere and those facilities need to be at the municipal sites where people drop off their waste," said Dave Pritchard, senior technology strategist.

The report found that many people were making no attempt to re-use IT equipment – fewer than half had donated old computers and less than ten per cent had ensured they were recycled.

"Although one in four people do take their rubbish to their local tip, unless their laptop or PC is assessed on the site, there is no guarantee that it will be passed on for re-use or recycle," he added.
