UK will get job ads first

Jobs will first have to be advertised in UK Jobcentres before they are publicised abroad, it has been reported.

The home secretary Jackie Smith said the system would give UK workers an advantage.

The announcement by the Home Office follows repeated complaints jobs were offered to workers from abroad, when there are still high levels of unemployment.

Immigration rules have recently tightened and the UK has adopted a points - based system, similar to one used in Australia.

"Our new points system means that British jobseekers get the first crack of the whip and that only the skilled migrants we actually need will be able to come," border and immigration minister Liam Byrne said previously.

Despite recent high-profile lay-offs, there has been some positive news. Supermarket Morrisons has announced it will create 5,000 new retail jobs and HMV's buyout of music chain Zavvi has saved many workers from losing their jobs.
