Touch typing is an 'essential skill for the current jobs market'

Jobseekers should note that touch typing is an essential skill, which could help them find work in a difficult market, training provider Pitman notes.

According to the firm's Keith Wymer, secretaries or PAs should be typing at about 70 words per minute (wpm) and administrators should manage 45 wpm, as should IT professionals.

Touch typing proves much faster because "people who look at their fingers when they type are really dragged down by the brain watching what's going on", he explained.

Mr Wymer warned that it would be harder to find a position without the required skills because if you "can't type at a reasonable speed for the type of jobs you're going after, then the agency won't even look at you".

However, extra qualifications are not always the best way to help you land a new job. Research by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills has revealed there is an emerging gap between the supply and demand of graduates, as well as more people who are over-qualified.ADNFCR-1196-ID-19174747-ADNFCR
